Dental fillings are one of dentistry’s most basic and time-honored treatments. They are used to improve the health and beauty of teeth that have been compromised by such things as decay, cracks, fractures, chips or are simply worn down. Such teeth are prepared by removing decayed or affected portions, then filled with a strong dental material to restore their original size and proportions.
There are many types of filling materials available, each with advantages and disadvantages. Teeth can be filled with gold, porcelain, or the two most widely-used options: composite fillings and silver amalgam fillings – often simply called amalgam. Dr. Palak generally places white composite fillings which look most natural, are mercury free, and comfortable for you.
Although silver fillings have been used in dentistry for over 100 years, health concerns have been raised. This filling material consists of a combination of metals including mercury (a key concern for detractors). Dr. Palak has chosen not to use amalgam for her patients. In fact, the doctor is often called upon to replace – or recommends herself – the replacement of these older silver fillings with newer, tooth-colored material.
Composites are insoluble, insensitive to dehydration, easy to manipulate and best of all they are tooth colored material, so it can closely matched your existing teeth. Composites are strong, stain-resistant and require less removal of your tooth as compared to amalgam fillings.
